The Concord Oval community and sports precinct, the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the City of Canada Bay, is a world-class sporting complex that features an indoor recovery pool and spa for athlete training, indoor training and gym areas, indoor basketball courts, fitness studios, change rooms, and underground car parking. The site is also home to the Wests Tigers Rugby League Football Centre of Excellence and the West Harbour Rugby high-performance training facility.

 

Northrop joined the project during the later stages of the design phase and worked collaboratively with the project builder, ADCO, to integrate into the broader design seamlessly. Our structural team played a pivotal role in ensuring the large span roof framing, pile system, and post-tensioned slab system provided an economical outcome while satisfying the architect and stakeholder requirements. By re-engineering the roof structure, we saved a significant amount of roof steelwork and reduced the embodied carbon within the structure.

 

The civil designs were particularly challenging due to the inclusion of three water networks on the site (rainwater harvesting, stormwater, and street drainage diversion), with the diversion line needing to be diverted around the basement (under the oval). To ensure the water networks were free of services clashes before construction, a comprehensive BIM coordination process was undertaken. There is a significant amount of rainwater harvesting on site, which will primarily be re-used for irrigation of the oval.

 

Throughout the project, Northrop worked closely with ADCO and other stakeholders to deliver an outstanding outcome. Our team's ability to integrate seamlessly into the project, provide innovative solutions, and work collaboratively with all parties involved in the project ensured that the Concord Oval community and sports precinct was delivered  to the highest standards.
