2017 Coates Hire Newcastle 500

With over 190,000 people attending the first Coates Hire Newcastle 500 in November 2017, it is appropriate to reflect on how this amazing event was delivered.

Northrop’s involvement with the Newcastle 500 started in September 2016 when we were approached by iEDM to do concept designs for the new track.

This was later followed by detailed design and documentation and construction supervision.

The original construction program was February 2017 to September 2017, however the Motor Racing Legislation Amendment (Newcastle 500) Bill 2017 did not pass NSW State Parliament until March 1st 2017, and we then had to obtain construction approval from Destination NSW.

Construction did finally commence in May 2017 and was completed in November 2017.

In addition to this, we also completed the Bathers Way expansion along Newcastle Beach and Shortland Esplanade which forms an integral and picturesque part of the race track at the same time.

At its peak, Northrop had more than a dozen people working on the project full time and 2 people on site full time during construction.

The project has brought forward ten years of infrastructure spending for the Newcastle East End with a construction cost of approximately $15M.

The project demonstrates the very best in collaboration between Newcastle City Council, State Government, Ausgrid, iEDM, Supercars Specialist Track Safety Consultants, Hunter Water Corporation and the dedicated Northrop team.

The fact that the construction of the project was completed in under six months is a credit to all involved.
