Ramada Windsor Hotel to mental health facility
Adapting the 40 year-old Ramada Windsor Hotel in Queensland into a modern mental health facility presented complex structural challenges. This project involved refurbishing the existing hotel while demolishing part of the building to accommodate three new concrete floors and a steel-framed roof.
Northrop’s team carefully balanced cost and code requirements, using targeted structural upgrades in specific areas and reusing elements where possible. By conducting non-invasive and invasive tests, we verified the structural integrity, made critical reinforcements, and introduced new steel and concrete structures where necessary. In areas where the existing structure was insufficient, enhancements, including footing reinforcements and new columns between the basement and ground floor, were implemented to meet current Australian Standards.
The result, a transformed, safe, and compliant healthcare facility without overextending costs, making this project a model of adaptive reuse and resourcefulness.
