Northrop

Eric Tweedale Stadium is a new sports facility overlooking Granville Park. Northrop were engaged across all engineering disciplines to deliver this unique project. This new state-of-the-art community sports pavilion is home to the first-grade Two Blues Rugby Union team, with seating for 750 spectators, and is the first mass-timber framed grandstand structure in Australia. 

 

Sustainable design principles were front of mind on this project and it's not surprising that the resulting building has set a new benchmark in sustainable design. 

 

Mass timber is not usually the first material that comes to mind when talking to a structural engineer about 9.5m cantilevers, but through careful design in collaboration with the client and project team, Northrop were able to bring this vision to life. The roof design includes an intricate cantilever dia-grid like mass timber roof - Northrop went through a number of design iterations with the architect to achieve the architectural intent, which was all delivered in a BIM environment.

 

This project represents a significant investment from the Cumberland City Council into the sports and community facilities of Western Sydney and is a great addition to the local built environment.
