40 Years Strong

Northrop Sydney office, May 2016

This year marks a milestone in Northrop’s history as we proudly celebrate 40 years in business.

Our story began in 1969 when founder, Murray Northrop formed a small, yet successful partnership in Canberra. It was a time of economic prosperity with opportunities in the construction industry and Commonwealth money pouring into the new city. However in 1976 the economy turned, the firm ran short of work and retrenchments were on the line.

Murray dissolved the partnership but resolved not to lose his people. It was with this determination that Northrop Consulting Engineers was born. The importance Murray Northrop placed on showing loyalty to employees during difficult times became a legacy that has underpinned Northrop’s ongoing success.

While other companies were content to poach or retrench during business cycles, we took a different approach. We employed people early and cultivated their skills for our long-term growth without sacrificing them to short-term requirements. Perhaps this, more than anything explains why 40 years on, Northrop continues to flourish.

Today, we wholeheartedly believe in nurturing our people and building careers that enable leadership and ownership to pass from generation to generation. This way we can retain great talent while enriching our knowledge bank. Our clients benefit from capable, commercially savvy engineering teams lead by energetic, engaged owners and managers.

Northrop has survived four recessions over the past 40 years. Our tenacity to succeed coupled with the support and wisdom of our seasoned professionals has given us confidence and stability throughout the highs and lows.

So we thank our wonderful staff and clients who are an integral part of Northrop’s success. We have accomplished a lot together during our first 40 years, and our focus is now firmly set on the exciting road ahead.
