Northrop names five new principals

We’re excited to announce the appointment of five new Northrop Principals (owners); Aaron HughesAngus BrienJosh NeilKieran Steele and Simon Matthews.
 
These appointments recognise their contribution and influence as leaders within Northrop and the industry, their passionate commitment to the success of our business, and the value they provide to our clients.

Aaron Hughes
Principal | Sydney Structural Section Manager | Sydney
 
Aaron joined Northrop in 2008 and manages a structural team in our Sydney office. His engineering and managerial skills vary from leading large logistical projects housing automated storage and retrieval equipment, to managing a team delivering complex engineering works for architecturally bespoke concrete framed buildings for the tertiary clients. 
 
Aaron has worked with builders as the lead structural engineer on over a dozen industrial projects greater than 10,000m2, as well as a range of architects and interior designers on numerous inner-city commercial fit out projects. Aaron has a passion for working collaboratively with clients to achieve their vision. By understanding their needs at the deepest level, he delivers solutions that are truly customised. 
 
Outside of Northrop, you’ll find Aaron pursuing some of his other passions like playing guitar and subbies rugby.
 
 
Angus Brien 
Principal | Flooding Group Manager | Newcastle
 
Angus is a floodplain management and stormwater engineer with over ten years’ experience in the private and local government sectors. He joined Northrop in 2008 and manages the flooding team in our Newcastle office.
 
Angus developed this niche technical service offering to support our land development, public infrastructure, commercial and industrial projects, and is passionate about helping clients understand and mitigate flood risk through solutions that maximise development outcomes.
 
Outside of Northrop, Angus is a brand new dad enjoying the challenges of parenthood, coffee connoisseur, and avid golfer.
 
 
Josh Neil
Principal | Lead Structural Engineer | Brisbane
 
Josh is a talented structural engineer with 25 years’ experience in Brisbane and across the country. 
 
He is best known for his expertise long span and lightweight structures, particularly sports projects having been involved in the design of numerous stadia throughout Australia and overseas. 
 
His experience is much broader and recognised by his long-standing clients who benefit from Josh’s work on industrial, health, educational, aviation and defence projects, including high rise and significant public buildings. 
 
Josh’s projects have received industry recognition for engineering excellence and design standards.
 
Outside of Northrop, Josh has rediscovered mountain biking with his kids after a twenty-year hiatus from the sport.
 
 
Kieran Steele
Principal | Electrical Manager | Canberra
 
Kieran has 23 year’s electrical industry experience and is a client focused engineer with an emphasis on providing a clear design vision and delivering projects in line with client expectations. 
 
He has a strong background in the commercial, residential and industrial buildings through his work as a project manager, engineer, estimator and electrician on a diverse range of projects. Kieran’s knowledge gained through project management coupled with practical industry experience produces effective, efficient, and innovative electrical designs.
 
Outside of Northrop, Kieran enjoys spending time with his family. You'll often find him at his local park with his two kids, wife and border collie. 
 
 
Simon Matthews 
Principal | Hydraulic & Fire Discipline Manager | Sydney
 
With over 35 years’ experience, Simon has led hydraulic design teams on all manner of public and private sector projects, and he has a particular passion for health projects. As Northrop’s Sydney Hydraulic & Fire Manager Simon manages a team of 14 people across our Sydney, Parramatta and Wollongong offices.
 
Simon likes being hands-on, leading his projects by focusing the team on what’s important and keeping the client well informed. His close involvement through all project stages provides clients with peace of mind, knowing his involvement will ensure timely progress and expectations will be met.
 
Outside of  Northrop, Simon enjoys snow skiing, flying fishing in the Australian high country, walking through the Italian countryside (his aim is to walk from London to Rome) and riding his motor bike.
