Northrop’s Roberta Brosco helps to build a better future for Peru
Roberta Brosco, a mechanical engineer from Northrop’s Canberra office, is volunteering on a construction project in Peru.
Run by local organisation Maximo Nivel, volunteers help to build or repair homes, add classrooms to schools, or to make structural improvements to orphanages.
The program aims to provide access to adequate education and healthcare facilities, which in turn reduces the risk for disease and increases literacy rates.
Volunteers have the unique opportunity to live and work in Peru, while giving back to the community and immersing themselves in the local culture.
Roberta appreciates Australia and the opportunities she has received. “I have such a wonderful life and live in a beautiful country, a free country that five years ago I chose to make my home. I was looking for ways to help others and to contribute to making this world a better place” continues Roberta.
The construction work is physically demanding, involving digging, removing dirt, mixing cement, carrying brick, preparing adobe, painting, and plastering.
“I would also like to dispel the notion that women can’t do manual work. Women are strong and there is no limitation to what they can achieve when they put their minds (and hands) to it.”
