Westmead Redevelopment Works

The Westmead Health Precinct in NSW is currently undergoing a $1 Billion+ upgrade - one of the biggest public health infrastructure projects in the state. The existing hospital is over 40 years old and the new upgrades will provide the local community and future generations with world-class clinical services for many years to come.

As construction is being carried out within a “live” hospital environment under time critical deadlines, the works have been carefully staged across a number of years and milestones to minimise disruption. Northrop has been involved in the project since 2017 and continues to provide multi-disciplinary services with our client, FDC.

Throughout the project, our team has gained valuable experience in working across multiple organisational levels within healthcare – particularly, by collaborating with user groups (management, clinical staff and nurses) by exploring all options for how best to deliver services in the new spaces. We have also had the opportunity to improve efficiencies and quality of our work by producing all our documentation in Revit, which forms a live BIM model for the service life of the building.

Given the complexity of working in a live environment collaboration was key as Northrop worked to embed future-focused sustainability and resilience initiatives across all disciplines. The ESD Team worked with each discipline to ensure that HINSW ESD outcomes alongside compliance requirements were achieved. This project was a complex multistage project that mixed major refurbishment works with new build alongside interconnection with new transport services, it required coordination between multiple contractors HINSW and TfNSW leading to a strong focus on communication and engagement.
