How do you avoid taking a detour on a major highway project? Our expert project management services and swept path analysis kept the M1 Highway Service Centre progressing while achieving substantial cost savings!

Northrop managed the Civil portion of the M1 Highway Service Centre development project in Cooranbong, NSW, overseeing both the northbound and southbound sites. Our role included comprehensive civil project management services, ensuring seamless coordination among stakeholders and consultants.

Complexities of modifying the existing Development Consent to implement an alternative layout proposed by PCI (Peregrine) had to be navigated. Thorough investigations and design adaptations to address site constraints and opportunities ensured compliance with Council reassessment requirements.

Ryan Diercke, Senior Civil Engineer, values the collaborative and productive partnership with PCI. Over the years, we’ve grown alongside them, supporting their expansion from South Australia into the east coast market. Together, we’ve delivered a range of projects from very small upgrades to major service centre developments catering for current and future transport demands.

To maximise cost efficiency and client savings, our team prioritised value engineering throughout the project. Optimising pavement design achieved reduced concrete thickness, lowering material costs without sacrificing durability. Detailed swept path analysis allowed refinement of pavement extents, minimising the areas requiring heavy-duty pavement and further cutting costs. Additionally, strategically relocating key service structures, such as large fire tanks and building pads, to areas with higher bearing capacity, eliminating the need for piling.

These thoughtful adjustments resulted in substantial cost savings totalling several million dollars and streamlined the construction timeline, demonstrating how effective management can turn challenges into remarkable successes.
