Ivanhoe Grammar School engaged Northrop and Building Engineering to create a state-of-the-art Aquatic and Wellness Centre. This collaboration allowed us to bring our structural and civil engineering expertise to the forefront.
The Aquatic and Wellness Centre at Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Plenty Campus is a cutting-edge facility designed to enhance the physical and mental well-being of students. Featuring a 25-meter pool, a learn-to-swim pool, a gymnasium, and multipurpose rooms, this centre seamlessly integrates modern amenities within the existing campus infrastructure. A key component of the design was ensuring this integration while maintaining the school’s aesthetic and functional standards.
Northrop’s structural engineering team ensured the creative vision of Peddle Thorp Architects was achieved – with the complex geometry of the roof being intricately framed out with structural steel. The structural engineering team worked closely with the architects to determine the most effective surface protection methodology to prevent premature corrosion of the steelwork. On the civil engineering side, we managed site grading, drainage, and utility connections to ensure the facility’s seamless operation. Our team worked closely with Building Engineering and Peddle Thorp Architects to address any challenges and ensure the project met the highest standards of quality and efficiency. This strong collaboration allowed us to deliver a facility that truly stands out.
The Aquatic and Wellness Centre has had a transformative impact on the Ivanhoe Grammar School community. By providing state-of-the-art facilities for physical fitness, aquatic education, and recreational activities, the centre has become a hub for student well-being and engagement. The 25-meter pool and learn-to-swim pool offer students a safe and modern environment to develop their swimming skills, while the gymnasium and multipurpose rooms support a wide range of fitness and wellness programs.
“The Aquatic and Wellness Centre is more than just a building, it’s a space where students can thrive, connect, and build a sense of community. This project exemplifies how thoughtful engineering and design can create lasting value for educational institutions and their communities,” says Northrop Principal Rob Winbank.
