Partnership

Northrop’s role in the Moorebank Intermodal project highlights a collaborative approach with a diverse group of key stakeholders. Partnering with organisations such as BMD, ESR, National Intermodal, Liverpool Council, Transport NSW, and Sydney Water, we played a pivotal role in both Design and Construct (D&C) support and construction-only works. By prioritising buildability and construction efficiency, we streamlined processes, optimised methodologies and fostered strong partnerships to drive project success. Our proactive approach ensured that all project goals were aligned, leading to seamless execution.

Project

The Moorebank Intermodal project focuses on critical infrastructure improvements at the Moorebank Avenue and Anzac Road Intersection. Over a six-year operational period, the project scope includes:
• Diversion road construction
• Intersection works
• Internal site works, loop roads, enabling works
• Major sewer rising main relocation for Western Sydney, with specialist engineering reports to support BOA applications
• Extensive underground infrastructure
Northrop played a key role in providing detailed design solutions, supporting the development of the Moorebank Avenue Temporary Diversion Road and future upgrade works. Utilising 3D modelling and services clash detection tools such as 12D and Navisworks, our Civil engineering team ensured precise planning and seamless execution.

Delivery

Northrop successfully navigated the complexities of the project through proactive stakeholder engagement, innovative problem-solving and efficient communication strategies. Key delivery approaches included:
• Stakeholder Alignment: Conducted workshops, Health, Safety, and Incident Discussions (HSID), and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
• Adaptive Solutions: Modified designs on-site, optimised traffic management, and transitioned temporary roads to permanent infrastructure.
• Efficient Communication: Conducted 275 meetings with stakeholders, consolidated reporting, and managed documentation to streamline approvals and design updates.
• Subconsultant Management: Coordinated with geotechnical, landscape, traffic control signal, electrical engineers, and Sydney Water specialists to ensure seamless project execution.
• Technology Integration: Utilised BIM models to facilitate real-time design updates and enhance buildability reviews for contractors.

Impact

The Moorebank Intermodal project is a transformative infrastructure development aimed at revolutionising containerised freight movement through Port Botany. The project delivers a faster, simpler, and more cost-effective logistics solution for businesses and consumers.
Northrop’s involvement contributed to achieving major project milestones, including the completion of a 1.5 km, four-lane temporary diversion road adjacent to Moorebank Avenue, as well as partial completion of a major intersection as part of the site’s main access. This critical infrastructure enables the next phase of works, including the widening and elevation of Moorebank Avenue. By maintaining team continuity and leveraging established collaboration practices, Northrop ensures the long-term success of projects and facilitates knowledge transfer for future infrastructure developments.
