Partnership

Port Macquarie Hastings Council were the recipients of Transport for NSW (TfNSW) Disaster Relief Funding after the Pappinbarra Bridge was destroyed by bushfire on the 8 November 2019. Northrop were engaged as the structural engineer to team up with King & Campbell who were responsible for the civil design of the approach roads. Northrop’s Bridges team worked collaboratively with both King & Campbell and Port Macquarie Hastings Council (PMHC) to successfully deliver the project.

Project

The new bridge was designed as a single lane structure capable of supporting SM1600 design loading in accordance with AS5100 (2017) and detailed generally in accordance with the TfNSW bridge technical directions and using TfNSW construction specifications.

Some key design considerations for this bridge included withstanding the relatively high flow velocities as the structure was submerged in the design flood event.

Delivery

Following contract award, Northrop worked closely with the bridge Contractor Saunders Civilbuild, to develop an alternate foundation solution to reduce construction time due to the very high strength rock encountered during piling of bridge foundations. A solution was developed where bored piles were founded on the high strength rock and concrete encased rock anchors were used to support the structure against the lateral and resulting uplift forces from the design flood event.

Impact

The project restored access to the area for the local residents and provided a safer more durable structure, minimising ongoing maintenance requirements for Council.
