Northrop Leadership Managers Conference

Who we are

Founded in 1976, Northrop is a locally-owned engineering consultancy with 9 offices and 550 people across the eastern seaboard of Australia.

We partner with builders, architects, project managers and developers to deliver pragmatic engineering solutions for the land and built environment. And we’re in it for the long haul – proud to be working with many of our clients for over 30 years.

With Northrop business owners at the table means dealing with people who are invested in the success of your project and understand the commercial realities and risks of development. We focus on building partnerships, not just projects.

Our people work in national teams across Civil, Structural and Integrated Buildings, combining big business capability with a small business attitude.

We love working in our own backyard – whether it’s a local hospital, sports centre or CBD tower. By bringing national expertise to local projects, we aim to make a real impact in our local communities.

We support our people to work autonomously and grow their careers with us.  We believe in empowerment over red tape, and create open doors for development, connection and learning.

Our leadership & board

Leadership

Northrop’s Leadership Team is led by our Managing Partner, Mark Sturgess, who works closely with the Board to set our strategic direction. The NLT is focused on delivering that strategy while keeping our people- and client-focused culture front and centre. They do this by living Northrop’s values and making sure our systems and processes deliver real value – for both our people and our clients.

Board

Our Board is responsible for the governance and long-term success of Northrop as an employee-owned business. Made up of four Executive Directors and up to two Non-Executive Directors, the Board provides clear leadership and accountability in strategic decision-making — helping drive our continued growth and standing in the industry.

Our responsibilities

Our people help design and shape the future of the places we live and work in. That brings big responsibilitiesto balance economic realities, climate impact, and human wellbeing with practical, effective solutions.
To stay accountable, we assess the impact of our workboth as a business and on our projects through the lens of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance).

Diversity and Inclusion

We want everyone at Northrop to feel comfortable bringing their best selves to work – because we know diversity leads to better ideas and outcomes for our people, our business and our projects. We’re committed to being a more inclusive workplace and continuing to foster a culture of challenging the status quo.

Industry partnerships

From Property Council Partnerships down to team-based think tanks, driving improvement and having a real impact is important to us. Contributing to the engineering and consulting specialties at an industry level is encouraged and supported by the Northrop Leadership Team.

Our people are helping to build a more connected industry by participating in committees including PCA, UDIA, CIBSE, MECLA, Consult Australia, ACSE and Engineers Australia. We’re active in developing new Australian Standards and technical guidelines as well as guest lecturing at local Universities and TAFEs.

Our Structural engineers are embedded in the activity of MECLA, contributing to the research required to advance products and improve both the climate impact and project outcomes for our communities. Senior leaders contribute their time lecturing at local universities, helping the next generation dive deep into understanding real world projects and solutions.
