AMC Architecture engaged Northrop to deliver the building services design for the new Denman Prospect Community and Childcare Centre — the first community facility in Molonglo Valley, one of Canberra’s fastest-growing districts.

The brief called for a modern, welcoming, and highly functional hub for locals. The two-storey facility offers 956sqm for the Early Learning Centre and 1,178sqm for the Community Centre, creating a space that supports learning, connection, and community activities under one roof.
From the outset, the project required balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders while maintaining a clear focus on quality, practicality, and budget. Northrop worked hand-in-hand with AMC and the broader design team, developing innovative and efficient engineering solutions that were well-received by both the client and the community.

The challenges of delivering during the pandemic meant our team had to move quickly, identifying potential supply chain risks early and collaborating with the builder to find alternative products and methods that kept the project on track.

In line with Denman’s electrification goals, our hydraulic and electrical designs supported the district’s shift towards higher sustainability targets, including provisions for all electric plant and innovative lighting solutions. We also partnered closely with the architect to integrate accessibility considerations from the start, including hearing augmentation systems to meet disability inclusion targets.
The result is a purpose-built facility that not only meets the immediate needs of the Denman community, but also positions it for a sustainable, accessible, and connected future.
