Northrop successfully completed a specialist lighting project at the Less Pavilion, a unique architectural structure located in Dairy Road, Canberra. The Less Pavilion comprises of 36 concrete columns and a circular ramp that leads up to a viewing platform. In addition to the impressive architecture, the site also features 6,000 individual plants of over 50 different species, many of which are native to the area. A small, continuous, and shallow stream runs through and down the structure’s columns, creating a stunning natural element that adds to the site’s overall aesthetic.

To achieve the project’s objectives, Northrop utilised projector luminaires with varying beam angles, which were strategically placed to highlight and accentuate the Less Pavilion’s concrete columns. The close proximity to the concrete columns posed challenges to ensure that the light was evenly spread out. As a result, various lighting models were set up to ensure that the optics caused a uniform light level to be pleasingly aesthetic to the viewer. Careful considerations would need to occur so that the lighting controls and conduits were discretely concealed to complement the architect’s vision for the project.

The team’s collaborative approach and attention to detail resulted in an efficient and functional lighting system that complemented the site’s botanical landscape. As the plants continue to grow, the site will evolve to a lush landscape that is complemented with the use of narrow in-ground luminaires. These luminaires are particularly striking and creates a visual contrast of the landscape lighting features on the concrete columns. Overall, the project now boasts a stunning lighting system that showcases the site’s impressive architecture and botanical landscape.
