Real Partnerships: Preserving and Evolving Australia’s built Heritage

Living and breathing Heritage buildings and structures

At Northrop we’re passionate about preserving and evolving Australia’s built heritage. Our dedicated Heritage Team works exclusively on these projects – bringing valuable knowledge on construction methods, preservation technologies and certification requirements to the table.

When it comes to heritage buildings, you can’t always find the answers in a textbook. You need an expert – someone who’s worked on a similar building, understands how it was built and can give you the best chance at taking a proactive approach to your restoration or adaptive reuse project.

Our team is comfortable working in isolation or in partnership with larger teams and are just as home working on a ‘new’ development as we are preserving an existing heritage site. We often fill in the specialist gaps that are left behind, such as stonework, roofing, waterproofing, plasterwork, glazing and heritage windows, leadwork, termite assessments and so on.

Having worked on large redevelopments including some of Sydney’s prestigious Sandstone buildings to the preservation of WW2 fortifications in our National Parks, our specialist heritage team is up to the challenge for your next heritage project.

Northrop were there to provide solutions to the complex remediation of the Department of Lands Building. Every challenge felt like a shared hurdle, tackled together. Their practical approach, combined with a genuine partnership, turned a challenging restoration into manageable steps

Structural Condition Assessments

We look at how a structure has performed in the past and compare it to modern use to get a pragmatic assessment of where structural intervention is required. This allows us to provide clients with highly accurate, detailed reports, minimising invasive investigations and enabling targeted, cost-effective repairs.

Heritage Structural Upgrades

We design reversible, minimally invasive strengthening solutions using historically material compatible methods. Our design approach preserves original fabric, meeting modern safety standards without compromising heritage significance, ensuring long term building viability.

Adaptive Reuse Engineering

We integrate modern building codes with historical construction techniques, providing innovative, compliant adaptation designs from first principles. This allows functional, modern spaces while retaining historical character, maximising property value and ensuring heritage compliance.

Construction Methodologies

Due to the complexity of existing structures, we offer staged methodologies to help contractors price and deliver work enabling more practical solutions ensuring we are coordinated with the site team to make our designs efficient.

Temporary Works

We understand how buildings have been put together and understand that temporary strengthening is required in the process of permanent construction allowing an integrated and coordinated approach to design.

When our team can bring expert knowledge to the table to help extend the life of a heritage structure – that's satisfying. Seeing the public able to safely experience these buildings and structures is even better.
