Eryn Cooper

Central Coast
Graduate Structural Engineer

What’s your job about?
As a structural engineer, my job typically involves collaborating with architects and other consultants in the design of buildings to ensure that they have enough strength and stability to withstand various expected actions throughout the design life of the building. When starting on a new design, I’ll set up a job summary which includes reviewing the architectural drawings and a bit of research to determine the building classification, durability and loading requirements. Another aspect of my job is inspecting the structure while it’s being constructed and ensure that it is being constructed in accordance with our structural drawings.

What’s your background?
I grew up on the Central Coast and attended the University of Newcastle where I studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering. While the university courses that are included in the degree cover structural, geotechnical and water engineering, I was set on structural engineering from the start. I became interested in engineering because I’d enjoyed maths and physics in school, and I also liked buildings. I had considered architecture as an option but preferred the idea of the problem solving and more technical role involved with structural engineering.

Could someone with a different background do your job?
Yes! As long as they had an engineering degree, if someone enjoys problem solving then structural engineering is a good option.

What’s the coolest thing about your job?
I enjoy the diversity in both the types of projects I get to work on and the day-to-day work which can vary from detailed design in the office or going to site for inspections. I also like the atmosphere of the office that I work in.

What are the limitations of your job?
Tight deadlines can be tricky, especially when combined with ensuring that the design of the structure is safe for future occupants. I work with a good team who will share the workload if needed and projects will be verified by a senior engineer before they are sent out.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student…
– Make lots of friends at university, it is much easier to get through the degree when you can bounce ideas off peers and motivate each other.
– Go to networking events and meet people in the industry.
– The stress wont last forever and your hard work will pay off!
