Nicolas Merchan Dominguez

Coffs Harbour
Graduate Structural Engineer

1. What is your job about?

My job consists in the design of structural elements in different kind of projects ranging from small residential additions to multi-story buildings. During this phase I do my best to interpret the Australian Standards and Code of construction so I can bring projects to life. I also carry out inspections during the construction phase of the projects and ensure that the builder and subcontractors understand and build these elements according to our design intent.

2. What is your background?

I have a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering and since then I have worked as a project engineer in multi-story mix developments, (in the opposite side of where I am now), I have dealt with different consultants, to carry out the project to the best of my ability and transmit their design intent to the subcontractors. I was responsible for the quality control during construction and also participated as a member of the Safety Committee to ensure all works were carried out safely.

I have decided to change my job and focus more on the design part of the construction industry to further my knowledge as an Engineer and practice everything that I have learned during my time as a student and working on site.

3. Could someone with a different background do your job?

If you put your mind and heart into it, you can achieve anything in life, that’s my philosophy. I think anyone can do this job if they prepare themselves accordingly and are willing to acquire the knowledge, experience and a few headaches. But being part of the progress of your city is priceless and it is so rewarding when you drive past a building where you have been involved.

4. What is the coolest thing about your job?

The best part is being able to see projects start and finish and the opportunity to know all the people involved in them, it creates relationships and builds trust for the company within your community. (Also, the aircon in the office is very cool).

5. What did you find challenging about the role and any advice to overcome this?

Something that is and will be challenging is the amount of information that is available and that you have to absorb and understand it constantly, no matter how many projects you do, every time you’ll have to revisit codes and standards to make sure you are following the right procedures, and that you will doubt yourself more often than not.

Talking to your peers and to your mentors can help to clarify those doubts and knowing that the dumbest question is the one you didn’t ask.
