Partnership

In close partnership with RF Corval and Roberts Co, Northrop provided civil and structural engineering services for Moxy Sydney Airport, from the feasibility stage through to construction.

Marking the debut of Moxy Hotels in Australia, this 13-storey, 301-room property is part of Marriott International’s fastest growing brand in the Asia Pacific. The hotel features an onsite café and bar, fitness centre, retail offerings, and vibrant communal spaces, all strategically located near Sydney Airport’s domestic and international terminals.

Project

The hotel reimagines the traditional airport stay with vibrant guest experiences, compact and consolidated rooms and energetic, sociable service. Setting a new standard for airport accommodation, it offers a dynamic environment where guests enjoy everything they need—and nothing they don’t.

Artist Elliott Routledge was commissioned to create a striking totem-style sculpture and two major public artworks, including a bold kaleidoscopic blue-and-white façade wrap. This playful, eye-catching design helps define the distinctive personality of the hotel.

Delivery

Navigating the challenges of constructing near a rail corridor and proximity to Sydney Airport, our team approached the structural solutions for the project in a pragmatic manner. The use of precast in particular to achieve buildability and aesthetic outcomes was an early decision developed alongside Evolution Precast, with consideration for overhead power lines and crane lifting constraints

Impact

This project broke significant boundaries during construction by fostering diversity, with over 50% of the construction team being female, and successfully delivering the project within a 5-day work week.
