Partnership

After delivering several large industrial and commercial projects together, Taylors brought Northrop in to help them deliver the external works for Microsoft’s new data centre in Seven Hills. Taylors also sought a second opinion on the foundation design for the project, engaging Northrop to undertake a peer review on the building loads and foundation design.

We have recently delivered the Advanced Manufacturing and Readiness Facility (AMRF) in Bradfield with Taylors, as well as the Powerhouse Storage Facility and many industrial projects.

We took a lead role in designing the external service support strategy for power and water coming into the building, coordinating structure with the various services inputs to minimise redundant structure – in particular the number of new foundation piles required.

Project

Microsoft are growing their presence in Australia, securing approvals for several major sites to address a significant need for data centre space, in part due to the recent boom in AI technology.

This project is a new two-storey 19.2MW data centre, including 9 new generators and significant external plant and fuel storage.
Taylors wanted to ensure that the external structural works were well coordinated and efficient, with consideration for proprietary services bracketry systems and a constrained site.

They also had some concerns about the foundation design, which we reviewed alongside the incumbent building structural engineer.

Delivery

We delivered the structural design for the auxiliary works around the data centre perimeter, largely consisting of steel frames to support the significant services coming in and out of the building itself.

The primary project challenge for us was coordinating the different services and site constraints around the perimeter of the building. We leant heavily on 3D coordination in Navisworks to optimise the location of structural supports.
