In 2022 this project was acknowledged at the Master Builders Awards, winning the category ‘Private School $20m - $40m’ where the judges said, “it is recognised as one of the very best Junior Schools in terms of design and build across Australia and is loved by teachers and students.”
Northrop have been involved in a number of smaller projects for the Central Coast Grammar School, where we created a solid rapport with the client. We also have a well-established relationship with the Project manager, and over the life of this project, we developed a strong working relationship with both the Builder and Architect. Our positive relationships particularly helped when working with the architect during the design stages. As a team, we had multiple collaborative workshops where Northrop could tailor our design to meet both architectural and client needs.
Central Coast Grammar School – Junior School is an award-winning facility that caters to students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The project consists of three buildings linked around a central courtyard, with multiple playgrounds and a Grandstand for their new oval. The main goals and objectives of this project were to construct facilities that met the budget but would also work within the tight timeframe so that the school would be operational at the start of the school year.
From a technical aspect, one of the challenges of the site was the stormwater component. The buildings are located on an overland flow path which impacts the localised flooding of the area and had the potential to be detrimental to the existing Senior School.
Structurally, the challenges related to the slopping site. This called for careful consideration of retaining requirements and how those retaining walls interact with existing buildings. Northrop was able to overcome all technical obstacles with immaculate attention to detail, imaginative thinking and, close coordination with other parts of the project team as well as local council & authorities.
It was published in the 2023 CCGS Annual Report that Central Coast Grammar School – Junior School had 700 students enrolled from Kindergarten to Year 6. This is one of the larger junior schools on the Central Coast and has had an undeniable impact on not only the students’ lives but their families and neighbouring communities.
