Northrop partnered with Health Infrastructure NSW from the early planning stages of the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct, providing structural and civil engineering services through the Planning Phase and into the Delivery Phase. Following the appointment of Multiplex as the principal contractor, Northrop was novated to continue delivering engineering services through construction, providing continuity from concept design to project completion.
Project
The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct is one of the largest health infrastructure projects ever delivered in regional New South Wales. Designed to serve more than 800,000 people across Greater Newcastle, the Hunter New England region and northern NSW, the redevelopment significantly expands the campus’s capacity while creating a modern, integrated health, education and research precinct. The project includes a new Acute Services Building, expanded clinical and non-clinical facilities, upgraded transport and public infrastructure, and enhanced connections across the existing hospital campus to support world-class healthcare, research and innovation for generations to come.
Delivery
The redevelopment extended well beyond the new Acute Services Building, requiring extensive structural and civil engineering works across the live hospital campus. Northrop delivered integrated engineering solutions for the new Acute Services Building, a multi-level basement car park, refurbishment works within the existing hospital, a new main entrance and arrival precinct, site-wide road infrastructure upgrades, and reinforced earth retaining walls up to nine metres high. Together, these works improved connectivity across the campus while supporting the delivery of a modern, integrated healthcare precinct.
Impact
The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct represents a generational investment in healthcare for Greater Newcastle, the Hunter New England region and northern NSW. By expanding emergency, intensive care and surgical services while bringing healthcare, education and research together on one campus, the precinct will support better patient outcomes and help meet the region’s growing healthcare needs for decades to come.
