Northrop collaborated with the City of Coffs Harbour, Turner & Townsend, DRA Architects, and Patterson Building Group to deliver the Sportz Central upgrade. Our structural and civil engineering services supported the revitalization of this key indoor sporting facility. The team worked closely with council and project partners to integrate modern infrastructure upgrades with the existing structure, ensuring a practical and cost-effective solution that continues to serve the needs of the wider community.
The Sportz Central upgrade aimed to bring Coffs Harbour’s major indoor sporting venue in line with modern accessibility, performance, and safety standards. The project involved the addition of a new basketball/multi-use court, refurbishment of existing courts, upgraded amenities and change rooms, and improvements to entry and access. The upgrade also addressed compliance with national sporting codes and accessibility standards, all while keeping the centre operational throughout construction.
Northrop provided structural and civil engineering services for the upgrade of Sportz Central. Our structural team designed framing systems to support the new court extension and associated roof structure, while assessing and upgrading the existing structure to suit updated usage and compliance requirements. Civil services included drainage upgrades, pavement design, and improvements to pedestrian and vehicular access around the site. Working closely with DRA Architects, Turner & Townsend, and Patterson Building Group, our team provided engineering advice throughout design and construction phases, ensuring the works were integrated with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Our solutions focused on buildability, long-term performance, and compatibility with the existing structure and site conditions.
The upgraded Sportz Central provides Coffs Harbour with a more functional and accessible venue for local sport, training and community events. The new court and refurbished amenities have improved capacity and comfort for players and spectators alike, while civil upgrades enhance site circulation and user safety. Northrop’s engineering input supported the project’s goals of longevity, accessibility and community benefit—helping ensure the centre remains a valuable regional facility into the future.
