118 Mount Street, North Sydney

118 Mount Street is a 29-storey A-grade commercial tower in North Sydney, completed in 2020. Northrop were engaged by Zurich to provide structural engineering services for their new Australian headquarters.

One of the key considerations for Zurich was maximising floorplate NLA by optimising the structural design of the core. Northrop used ETABS to incorporate wind tunnel test results into our design, featuring an offset core to the north of the floor plate. This modelling also enabled us to predict the building movements and push the building envelope as close to the neighbouring boundary as possible.

Other technical challenges for our team included the design of complex transfer structures, temporarily propping and extending an existing basement, and mitigating risks of thermal cracking in large concrete pours.

Working closely with fjmt studio and Roberts Pizzarotti through project delivery, Northrop are proud to have helped create an efficient, buildable and beautiful landmark tower for North Sydney.
