West Epping Oval

Hornsby Council engaged Northrop to assist the development of a refurbished sports complex in West Epping. The new facility would accommodate cricket, football and ancillary sports, such as tennis. It is intended to become a focal point for the local community.

The park upgrade included car parking, access roads, premium synthetic sports field (to FIFA specifications), flood detention basin and a landscaped children’s play area.

Existing infrastructure services were to be retained, with some upgraded or relocated. Our team managed service authority approvals for relocation and coordinated across disciplines to incorporate critical infrastructure into the site design. A telecommunications tower was kept operational throughout construction.

Poor subgrade meant earthworks modelling needed to be performed to ensure a balance of cut and fill across the site and reduce the import /export of costly material. We seized an opportunity to provide a flood detention and water quality basin requiring dam-break assessment to minimise risk of flooding to downstream residents.

After a change in LGA boundaries, we adjusted our design package documentation to meet the requirements of Parramatta Council – the new owner of the site. We became the link between councils during the amalgamation, providing technical briefing, design history and working closely with the contractor and Council to resolve construction issues.

Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with the Council’s team and were flexible in our design to reflect budget constraints and site demands. We are also provide construction phase engineering to support delivery of the design intent.
