Zen Oasis, Berrima

Zen Oasis is a restaurant and function centre situated on 100 acres of land in the Southern Highlands. This project involved constructing a new restaurant, kitchen with multiple food-staging areas, conference building and function areas, all of which span over 5000sqm.

The intricate ceiling design, made up of different sized vaults and shapes, proved to be the most challenging element of the structural design. We worked closely with the builder to achieve the architectural intent – an intricate structural steel frame (some with relatively large spans) was designed to accommodate the unique ceilings. Northrop also assisted the builder to carry out value engineering exercises which resulted in some changes to the original design and cost-savings for the builder.

Set over such an extensive site, the landscaping set interesting design challenges for both the civil and structural teams to solve. The exterior works included a new yoga structure with a powered louvre roof, landscaping over 50,000sqm of the property with new decking over full dams and ponds, deco pathways, and 4000sqm of external paving.

Despite the scale of the project and the fact that it was largely completed during the Covid-19 pandemic, our high level of detailing and strong relationship with the builder assisted in construction progressing smoothly on site, with the project being delivered ahead of schedule.
