Located within the Blacktown International Sports Park, the Blacktown Exercise, Sports and Technology (BEST) Hub redefines what a community facility can be. More than just a building, it is a pioneering centre that elevates health, rehabilitation and sports innovation for people of all ages, while also advancing education and research across Western Sydney.
Northrop worked closely with Blacktown City Council, ARM Architecture and Savills to bring this iconic project to life. Our civil engineering scope covered the BEST hub, an adjoining accommodation building, estate management works, public domain improvements and landscaped areas. By collaborating across disciplines, we ensured the civil design integrated seamlessly with the architectural and functional requirements of the site.
One of the project’s biggest challenges was the site’s flat terrain. To address flood risk and preserve natural water flows, Northrop designed and implemented innovative stormwater solutions using box culverts instead of conventional pipes. This not only reduced the risk of flooding but also protected and maintained flow to the existing ponds, ensuring the site’s environmental sustainability.
The BEST Blacktown Exercise, Sports and Technology Hub has delivered significant social, health and economic impact for Western Sydney, establishing a landmark facility that supports year-round participation in sport, recreation and community programs. By combining elite training infrastructure with accessible community spaces, the project has helped increase active participation opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities, while also supporting local pathways into high-performance sport and education. The hub has strengthened Blacktown’s position as a regional destination for sport and innovation, attracting events, visitors and investment into the area.
The facility is a transformative civic asset that continues to deliver long-term wellbeing, social cohesion and economic benefits across Western Sydney.
