Jeremy Sue, Brisbane Local Leader for Northrop, says, “It’s exciting to see the industrial sector leading the charge on sustainability – these facilities have a vital role to play in shaping a lower-carbon future. Clachair Venter’s commitment to collaboration and her ability to navigate uncharted territory were instrumental in making this project a success.”

Partnership

Northrop collaborated with Port of Brisbane, McNab, Sparc, and Johnstaff to deliver Port of Brisbane’s Stage 2’s first development for tenant Electrolux Group. This partnership highlights Northrop’s ability to integrate innovative structural solutions with sustainable design principles. Our engagement ensured a seamless collaboration between key stakeholders to create a high-performance facility that aligns with sustainability objectives and industry best practices.

Project

Northrop played a crucial role in the development of a 21,255m2 warehouse, dock office, truck manoeuvring hardstand, and car park for Electrolux Group at Port West Stage 2. A key feature of the project is the high-end Experience Centre and office, designed with a Glulam timber superstructure and Cross laminated timber (CLT) flooring, roof, and walls, the first of its kind at Port of Brisbane. The facility is targeting a 6-Star Green Star (v1.3) rating.

Delivery

Northrop provided structural engineering expertise to support the delivery of a state-of-the-art warehouse and office space for Electrolux. Our scope included designing and detailing a sustainable Experience Centre, incorporating engineered timber solutions that align with industry-leading sustainability targets. The project also required careful consideration of low-carbon concrete applications to reduce environmental impact.

Working closely with the geotechnical engineer, Northrop addressed challenging ground conditions, ensuring a structurally sound foundation for the facility. Our integrated approach allowed us to deliver an efficient, high-quality outcome while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Impact

The Electrolux facility at Port West Stage 2 exemplifies Northrop’s commitment to sustainable engineering. The use of Glulam and CLT in the Experience Centre showcases innovative, low-carbon construction methods, setting a benchmark for future developments at the Port of Brisbane. Additionally, our solutions ensured the project met stringent environmental requirements while optimizing cost and performance.

By addressing ground condition challenges and integrating sustainability-focused engineering, Northrop contributed to a high-performance facility that meets Electrolux’s operational needs and aligns with broader industry sustainability goals
