"The Eumundi Pedestrian Bridge project addressed longstanding community concerns about pedestrian and cyclist safety along Eumundi-Noosa Road, where the existing bridge offered less than one metre of shoulder. Northrop was responsible for the detailed design and documentation for the new 39-metre long, single-span steel SHS truss pedestrian bridge and the associated reinforced concrete abutments and foundation piles. The bridge and boardwalk network provide a dedicated, safe connection across the North Maroochy River and greatly enhance active transport infrastructure in the region. Our team's collaborative efforts with DM Composites have resulted in a structure that not only meets the community's needs but is also an elegant structure that stands as a testament to effective engineering and partnership," says Richard Officer, Bridges Group Manager.
Northrop worked in a Design & Construct (D&C) partnership with DM Composites to deliver the Eumundi Pedestrian Bridge.
DM Composites was responsible for the design and construction of the adjacent FRP boardwalk, while Northrop’s Bridges and Infrastructure team undertook the detailed design and documentation for the steel truss bridge structure. Sunshine Civil Solutions served as the lead civil contractor, delivering the reinforced concrete abutments and bored cast in-situ pile foundations. The project was delivered for Sunshine Coast Council, with the Department of Transport and Main Roads as a key stakeholder.
Northrop’s Bridges and Infrastructure team delivered the detailed design and documentation for the steel truss pedestrian bridge. Our technical scope included full structural analysis and dynamic frequency assessment using Space Gass, and 3D modelling in Revit for design coordination and visualisation. The structure was designed to comply with the Australian Bridge Design Code AS5100 and meet hydraulic performance requirements, including resistance to water flow forces, debris accumulation, and log impact.
The project was successfully delivered in close coordination with DM Composites to ensure that their transportation and logistics requirements were achieved. Sunshine Civil Solutions, as the lead civil contractor, constructed the reinforced concrete abutments and bored cast in-situ pile foundations.
Key members of the Northrop team included Richard Officer as Northrop’s Design Manager and Verifier, Josiebel Cardona as Lead Structural Engineer and Aaron Chesterfield who was responsible for the documentation and detailing of the bridge.
This project significantly improves safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists by providing a dedicated crossing separated from traffic. It encourages active transport and creates a continuous and accessible link across the North Maroochy River, supporting local residents, schools, and visitors. The bridge responds to over two decades of community advocacy and government commitment to safer infrastructure.
