S3 represents the next stage in our ongoing partnership with Multiplex and NextDC, following the successful delivery of civil and structural services on S1 and S2. These repeat collaborations reflect the trust built over time and our proven ability to deliver integrated engineering solutions for highly complex facilities. Working closely with both Multiplex and NextDC, we have developed a deep understanding of the drivers behind resilient, high-capacity data centres, enabling us to anticipate challenges and contribute effectively to each project.
Located in Artarmon, just 10 kilometres from the Sydney CBD, S3 is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the growing demand for secure data storage and interconnected cloud systems. The 80MW, nine-level building spans more than 26,000 square metres and combines technical performance with thoughtful design. In addition to its core function as a data centre, the facility includes client-focused amenities such as reception areas, dedicated meeting spaces, and a 73-seat auditorium, positioning it as both a technological and business hub.
Following the success of S2, Multiplex again engaged Northrop to deliver the civil engineering design for S3. The site presented challenges with steep gradients and the need to align multiple on-grade access points. Our civil team addressed these through innovative level transitions, including raised planter boxes along the boundary, while implementing effective stormwater drainage solutions to enhance site resilience.
Collaboration was central to the project’s success, with Northrop working closely alongside Greenbox Architecture and landscape architect Urbis to integrate civil solutions into the broader design vision. Our dedicated structural team also supported the delivery of key civil infrastructure elements, ensuring a coordinated and streamlined service for the client.
S3 extends NextDC’s Sydney network, interconnecting with the existing S1 and S2 facilities to form a highly resilient, multi-site digital ecosystem. This expansion strengthens NextDC’s ability to provide world-class, interconnected services to the rapidly evolving technology sector. By supporting this strategic growth, Northrop has played a role in shaping infrastructure that not only meets today’s digital demands but also sets a benchmark for innovation, performance, and client experience.
