Partnership

The TAFE NSW Institute of Applied Technology (IATC) for Construction at Kingswood is a purpose-built education facility designed to train the next generation of trades professionals.

The three-storey building features double and triple-height workshops, seminar rooms, engagement spaces, a gantry crane, working-at-heights platforms, and an outdoor sand pit for civil training. Northrop contributed structural, civil and sustainability design to this landmark project.

Project

The facility had to accommodate high load demands, tall open volumes and diverse learning environments while maintaining cost efficiency and sustainable performance. Achieving the architectural intent, a floating roof over open teaching zones, required careful coordination between steel and concrete systems.

Sustainability was a central priority, the facility integrates efficient construction and operational strategies leading to be one of the first TAFE NSW projects to achieve a Green Star rating.

Northrop designed a durable, reinforced concrete structure capable of supporting large spans and high live loads. A steel roof structure spanning 24 metres shelters an open-air workshop featuring a gantry crane and covered walkway.
Our engineers developed efficient connection details to simplify erection and reduce steel tonnage. Civil designs optimised site grading and integrated stormwater management with landscaped learning zones. Sustainability specialists supported material selection and passive design strategies to improve energy performance and operational efficiency.
