Hornsby Council engaged Northrop to assist with the development of a refurbished sports complex in West Epping. The new facility was designed to accommodate cricket, football, and ancillary sports such as tennis, with the intention of becoming a focal point for the local community.
The park upgrade included new car parking, access roads, a premium synthetic sports field built to FIFA specifications, a flood detention basin, and a landscaped children’s play area.
Existing infrastructure services were largely retained, with some upgraded or relocated. Our team managed service authority approvals for the relocations and coordinated across disciplines to integrate critical infrastructure into the site design. A telecommunications tower was kept operational throughout the construction period.
Due to poor subgrade conditions, we undertook detailed earthworks modelling to ensure a balance of cut and fill across the site, minimising the need for costly import or export of materials. We also identified an opportunity to incorporate a flood detention and water quality basin, which required dam-break assessment to reduce flood risk for downstream residents.
Following a change in local government area boundaries, we revised our design documentation to meet the requirements of Parramatta Council—the new owner of the site. Northrop became the link between the two councils during the amalgamation, providing technical briefings, design history, and working closely with the contractor and Council to resolve construction issues.
Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with Council’s team and remained flexible in our design approach to accommodate both budget constraints and site complexities. We also provided construction phase engineering support to ensure the delivery aligned with the original design intent.
