Northrop partnered with Kempsey Shire Council and Lipman to deliver the Mid North Coast High Performance Centre at South West Rocks. Engaged on a design and construct basis, our structural engineering team worked closely with the builder and precast contractor to develop a buildable, efficient solution. Collaboration was key to overcoming construction constraints and ensuring the facility met both performance and community expectations.

Project

The Mid North Coast High Performance Centre is a purpose-built facility in South West Rocks, combining a multilevel grandstand, function room, amenities, and sports training areas. A key engineering challenge was the integration of a predominantly precast concrete structure within a complex site and build sequence. Northrop addressed this by developing a modular system of precast panels and steel elements to optimise construction efficiency while maintaining architectural intent and structural integrity.

Delivery

Northrop provided structural engineering services for the delivery of the High Performance Centre on a Design and Construct basis. The structure was designed primarily using precast concrete elements to accelerate construction, with extensive coordination between Northrop, Lipman and the precast contractor to refine the solution. Precast wall and slab panels were connected using integrated steel ‘stringer beams’ and couplers in a modular, ‘Lego-like’ system. Steel roof framing and bracing were sequenced alongside precast installation to ensure structural stability throughout construction. Additional elements like raised perimeter panels were used to serve dual purposes -acting as safety balustrades and contributing to the final design. Northrop’s approach balanced buildability, efficiency, and design intent while resolving key site and sequencing constraints.

Impact

Opened in February 2023, the Mid North Coast High Performance Centre has become a vital asset for the South West Rocks community. It provides a versatile venue for local sporting groups, junior development programs, and regional events. The facility’s thoughtful design and efficient construction have set a benchmark for future community sports infrastructure. Beyond sports, the centre contributes to community well-being by encouraging active lifestyles and providing inclusive spaces for gatherings, training and events.
