This project is a collaboration between the ACT Government, Icon CO and key project partners. Northrop’s strong relationship with Icon CO, built over previous successful school projects, underpins our role in delivering a sustainable, inclusive and future-ready learning environment.
As part of the ACT Government’s commitment to high-quality education infrastructure, a new Preschool to Year 6 school and Early Childhood Education and Care Centre (ECEC) is being developed in Ginninderry. Strathnairn Primary School will accommodate up to 780 students and 130 ECEC places, featuring flexible learning spaces designed for adaptability, collaboration and inclusivity. Sustainability is a core focus, with passive design strategies, energy-efficient systems, and solar power integration targeting a 5-Star Green Star rating. The school’s design also respects its natural surroundings, integrating seamlessly into the Strathnairn landscape.
Appointed as Head Contractor in September 2024, Icon is leading the detailed design and construction alongside CK Architecture and Northrop. We refined the design to balance affordability with Green Star compliance, bushfire regulations, and flood resilience. Our expertise ensures alignment with sustainability goals while maintaining structural integrity and long-term functionality. The project is set for completion in 2026, coinciding with Ginninderry’s broader development.
Strathnairn Primary School will provide essential education infrastructure, supporting the growing Ginninderry community. Designed for safety, sustainability, and adaptability, it will serve as a model for future schools in the ACT. Opening in 2026, the school will foster community engagement, set new benchmarks in sustainable school design, and ensure local families have access to quality education close to home.
