Partnership

Northrop proudly collaborated with CO.OP Studio architects and ADCO Constructions to provide civil and structural engineering services for the Heffron Centre, a state-of-the-art sports and community facility, located in Maroubra. Created through an exciting partnership between Randwick City Council and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the centre comprises top-notch facilities for Rabbitohs’ training and administration. It also houses a special spot for elite gymnastics training and versatile sports courts for everyone in the community to enjoy.

Project

More than 10 years in the planning, the Heffron Centre completes the revitalisation of Heffron Park, redeveloped into a community-centred, fully integrated multi-purpose sporting hub and community precinct. It also fulfils the long-held vision of co-locating the Rabbitohs’ operations, including Souths Cares, in the heart of their supporter base in Sydney’s southeast.

The diverse range of uses housed under one roof necessitated tailored design solutions for each distinct area.

Delivery

The project is located on a sandy, contaminated site, requiring careful attention to the earthworks strategy to eliminate the need for off-site disposal. Our civil team adopted a modular infiltration system for on-site detention which was more cost effective than a traditional blockwork tank.

The sports courts required 42m span trusses, coupled with RHS purlins to support the Askin sandwich panel roof cladding. Exposed structural steelwork meant attention to detail was imperative to achieve architectural intent whilst maintaining an efficient structural design.

Impact

The Heffron Centre is a space designed to bring communities together through sport, education, recreation, and wellbeing—a true centre of excellence and a source of community pride. It serves as a genuine community sporting facility, where elite athletes share the space with aspiring sportspeople and local families.

“Northrop have a collaborative approach to problem-solving and were prepared to investigate multiple solutions to design challenges. The team are well informed, professional and enjoyable to work with. It is a pleasure to work alongside Northrop as part of the project team and we look forward to the next opportunity to do so.”
