Heffron Centre, Maroubra
The Heffron Centre, found in Maroubra, is a state-of-the-art sports and community hub. Created through a public-private partnership between Randwick Council and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, it comprises top-notch facilities for Rabbitohs' training and administration. Additionally, it houses a special spot for elite gymnastics training and versatile sports courts for everyone in the community to enjoy.
Situated on a sandy and contaminated location, the project required careful consideration of the earthworks approach to avoid off-site disposal. Our civil engineering team innovatively opted for a modular infiltration system, serving on-site detention needs with greater cost efficiency compared to a conventional blockwork tank.
The many different uses of the building meant unique design approaches were required for each specific area. The sports courts required 42m span trusses, coupled with RHS purlins to support the Askin sandwich panel roof cladding. Exposed structural steelwork meant attention to detail was imperative to achieve architectural intent whilst maintaining an efficient structural design.
The Heffron Centre is a great example of dynamic successful partnerships, resulting in a vibrant hub that bridges sports and community.
