The Point – 46A Albany Street, Point Frederick

We were engaged by Slater Architects to design a stunning two storey split level home on the waterfront at Point Frederick on the Central Coast. It consisted of large open plan living, dining and kitchen area surrounded by floor to ceiling windows and doors, three bedrooms and a study as well as home theatre room and alfresco balcony.

There were many structural challenges associated with this home including the high ceilings, floor to ceiling glazing and a 14m open span below the upper storey for glass doors which opened to the waterfront view. This span of glass doors was an important feature to both the architect and home owner and while it would have been simple to suggest placing a column in the middle, we worked closely with the client to push the limits and deliver their vision. This was achieved through the installation of a structural steel truss, portal frame and cantilevering UC structure at the balcony with minimal deflection tolerances.

Communication with the client and the builder was key throughout the project from design to construction and despite the challenges faced by the design team, the project was a major success with Mudgecorp receiving the 2017 MBA Excellence in Building Award for Best Custom Built Home between $2-$3 million.
