Warrigal, Queanbeyan

Warrigal is a three-storey residential aged care facility containing 124 suites and 8 serviced apartments, located on Canberra Avenue, Queanbeyan. The state-of-the-art complex represents the new model of aged care (which is completely unique to the area), where social connection underpins the design of the building. Northrop were engaged to provide civil and structural engineering services under a D&C contract. Throughout the project, our team had to consider and address several key site constraints - such as excavating close to existing structures, designing structures to limit impact on several arborist protected trees and allowing for the structure to facilitate internal courtyard gardens. Our early input with the builder also helped to overcome challenges with constructing a spilt level building with an irregular floor plate.

Our structural team is particularly proud of our ability to help the architect realise their unique porte cochere roof design, as well as thin party walls which we achieved by carrying out advanced analysis of concrete columns. With construction completed in 2019, the new development doubles the number of residential care beds available to cater for demand in the local community, and offers a completely new type of retirement living with a focus on lifestyle and well-being.
