Yennora Distribution Centre – Buildings 3 and 8A
Stockland’s Yennora Distribution Centre is one of the largest distribution centres of its kind in the southern hemisphere with over 300,000 sqm of warehousing and 66,500 sqm of dedicated container hardstand. The site had very poor ground conditions and the new modernised buildings were to be constructed over the existing slab and foundation system. To minimise demolition and off-site disposal costs, Northrop came up with a civil and structural solution that allowed the existing slabs and footings to remain in place, whilst the new buildings were constructed over the top.
The hardstand areas around the buildings needed to be very flat which made integration to the existing stormwater system very challenging. Northrop developed a grading scheme that provided a flat surface for container storage with integration into the existing drainage system, avoiding the need for deep and long pipelines in poor ground conditions. The best solution for the site responded to construction techniques required to deal with difficult ground conditions. We worked closely with FDC to understand the construction techniques they wanted to use to ensure that we could align the civil and structural engineering solutions to achieve this.
