Domremy College, Five Dock

Northrop provided structural engineering services for the Solais precinct project, which involved the construction of a modern two-storey learning space, complete with theatre, studios, a new library and collaboration spaces. The project also included a large portion of external works (retaining walls, seats and stairs) and car parking.

Northrop were given the opportunity to work with Reitsma in the early design coordination phases to carry out value engineering exercises. The original design was heavy and over-designed and our suggestions included removing the roof to lighten the whole structure, as well as utilising diagonal screw piles for lateral stability. Central to the project is the impressive architectural façade featuring off-form thin concrete walls (with light gauge structural steel framing) and recessed glazing, tucked neatly between existing building envelopes. This complex design required careful detailing and our project team worked closely with the architect (Hayball) to remain true to their architectural intent.

The resulting building, opened in Term 1 2021, has delivered a modern space with improved natural lighting and ventilation - all designed to improve the learning experience for students.
